DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (0-5, 0-2 CC) was defeated by Chowan University (1-3-1, 1-1 CC) by a score of 8-2 at Huggins Field on Saturday afternoon.
Quinlan Van Arkel opened the scoring with a brilliant free kick, and
Tobey Burling added a second-half header for the Fleet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After having to do a lot of defending in the early stages, the Fleet had their first opportunity on the counter, and
Hudson Lewis drew a foul just outside the penalty box, giving Erskine a real chance from a set piece. And freshman
Quinlan Van Arkel delivered with a sublime left-footed curler that nestled in the opposite corner to give Erskine a lead in the 25
th minute. Charley Leech equalized for Chowan in the 40
th minute as the match went to halftime knotted at one apiece. However, the Hawks scored 36 seconds into the second half to take their first lead and added two more goals to open up a 4-1 lead in the 60
th minute.
Tobey Burling's 86
th-minute headed goal off the assist from Van Arkel got the Fleet a goal back, but the Hawks pulled away late for the win.
THE TEAM
Erskine was outshot by Chowan 25 to 10, and the Hawks had a 16 to 3 advantage in shots on target.
THE PLAYER
In his first home Conference Carolinas match, freshman
Quinlan Van Arkel was involved in both Erskine goals, including a brilliant 25
th-minute free kick to give the Fleet the lead.

Erskine is at home again on Tuesday night, when the Fleet take on conference newcomer, Young Harris College (1-2-1). The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
