DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (0-6, 0-3 CC) was defeated by Young Harris College (3-2-1, 2-0-0 CC) by a score of 5-1 at Huggins Field on Tuesday night. Hudson Lewis scored in the 78th-minute for the Flying Fleet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Young Harris, a conference newcomer, are expected to be one of the premier men's soccer teams in Conference Carolinas in 2023, and they opened the scoring with a goal from Thomas Kleinpenning inside the first three minutes. The Fleet eventually settled in with the help of three early saves from Evan Zizek. In the 18th minute, Erskine had a chance to equalize, but Estevan DaCruz's shot was saved. The Mountains Lions doubled their lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Jamie Lapsley, who found the back of the net again in the 35th minute to give YHC a 3-0 halftime lead. Gustavo Avina and DaCruz each forced saves out of the Mountain Lions' goalkeeper early in the second half, but the visitors scored twice in a span of five minutes to put the game beyond reach for the Fleet. Erskine got its goal in the 78th minute, thanks to a free kick from Evan Williams that was lofted into the box, settled by DaCruz and Hudson Lewis pushed it past the on-rushing YHC goalkeeper for his second goal of the season.

THE TEAM
Erskine was outshot by Young Harris 17 to 10, and the Mountain Lions had a 14 to 6 advantage in shots on target.

THE PLAYER
Senior forward Hudson Lewis played all 90 minutes and scored his second goal of the season late in the second half of the match.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine goes on the road this weekend to continue Southwest Division play in Conference Carolinas, when the Fleet take on Emmanuel University (2-3, 1-1 CC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Erskine took down the Lions in their last trip to Franklin Springs, behind late goals from Justin Pena and Dennis Cole, back in 2021.
