HOW IT HAPPENED
Erskine's first game of the conference tournament quickly turned into a pitchers' duel with baserunners coming few and far between. But, Francis Marion struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning and added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fifth,
Dalton Boyd singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Then,
Jude Littrell got the Fleet on the board with an opposite-field single, cutting the deficit to 3-1. In the bottom half, the first two Patriot hitters reached base, as Erskine turned to
Johnny Hummel to limit the damage in the frame. And Hummel did more than just limit it, inducing a pop-up double play and a groundout to keep FMU off the board. Hummel continued to dominate in the middle innings, but the Erskine lineup struggled to generate offense. Hummel pitched into the eighth inning, before FMU loaded the bases with two outs, forcing the Fleet to call on
Parker Cassell. And Cassell only needed one pitch to strand the bases loaded and keep it a two-run game heading into the ninth. However, Erskine was unable to mount a rally as their season came to end in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
THE PLAYER
In his final appearance of a phenomenal Erskine career,
Johnny Hummel was electric once again. The senior right-hander tossed three and two-thirds hitless innings out of the bullpen and totaled six strikeouts, keeping the Fleet within striking distance.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine's 2023 season came to an end on Wednesday night as the Fleet will turn their attention to the off-season and preparations for 2024.
