Erskine Baseball | Big fourth inning helps Fleet take down West Alabama, 6-4

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Erskine College baseball team (24-16, 11-11 CC) defeated the University of West Alabama (17-22, 12-12 GSC) by a score of 6-4 at Tartt Field on Saturday afternoon. Inclement weather in the bottom of the sixth inning paused and ultimately ended the game early, but with Erskine leading after five complete innings, the Fleet get credit for the win. The weather washed out the originally scheduled second game of the doubleheader as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED
An Armando Becerra base hit in the first inning followed by a wild pitch and an RBI single from Dale Francis, Jr. gave Erskine an early 1-0 lead. But, West Alabama scored a run themselves in the bottom half of the first and added three more runs a few frames later as the Fleet found themselves in a 4-1 deficit heading into the fourth inning. Juan Jaime launched his sixth home run of the season, a solo blast to make it a 4-2 game. Then, a pair of singles from Logan Piedra and Jude Littrell followed by a hit by pitch from Becerra loaded the bases with just one out as Erskine threatened to get back into the game. Christian Rivera then worked a walk, scoring Piedra to get the Fleet within a run, and Francis, Jr. followed with another run-scoring hit, this one drove in a pair as Erskine regained the lead, 5-4. Caleb Dix set down the Tigers in order in the bottom half, and a Francis, Jr. RBI groundout in the top of the sixth provided some insurance. Following Erskine's final out in their half of the sixth, the rain continued to pour and lightning began to set in as the game was called there. But, with Erskine and West Alabama having completed the required five innings to make the game official, Erskine picked up a 6-4 win in the second and final game of a shortened weekend series.

THE PLAYER
Dale Francis, Jr. went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs, including the game-winning two-run single back in the fourth inning.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine and West Alabama wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
