HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Erskine 4-1 UNC Pembroke
The opening game of the afternoon quickly turned into a pitcher's duel, but it was the visitors who scored first on a bases-loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Kaley Ingle struck out the next batter to stranded the bases loaded and keep the deficit at 1. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, freshman
Gabby Burroughs flipped the game on its head with a clutch two-run home run, giving Erskine a 2-1 lead.
Maddie Ingram led off the sixth with a solo home run and then Burroughs left the yard again a few batters later as the Fleet opened up a 4-1 lead. A three-run cushion was more than enough for Ingle who went the distance once again, striking out 10 batters and earning her 13th victory of the season in a 4-1 Erskine win.
Game 2: Erskine 14-6 UNC Pembroke (Final / 5 innings)
After a pitcher's duel in Game 1, the Fleet offense came roaring to life in the second game of the doubleheader.
Hailey Watson started the scoring in the second inning with a two-run double and then scored on a wild pitch as Erskine took an early 3-0 lead.
Kaley Ingle worked a scoreless top of the third and the Fleet built on their momentum in the bottom half with an RBI groundout from
Gabby Burroughs. The Braves tied the game with a four-run top of the fourth, but Erskine immediately responded with a huge fourth inning of their own.
Mary Elizabeth Ballard put Erskine back on top with an RBI single, and then
Kyndall Chandler delivered with a run-scoring single of her own. A few batters later, Erskine scored twice with some help from a UNCP error, opening up an 8-4 lead. The Braves cut the Erskine lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but the Fleet lineup continued to pour it on, putting up another crooked number in the bottom of the fifth. A wild pitch and a bases loaded walk drove in a pair of Erskine runs to regain the Fleet's four-run lead. Then,
Peyton Rabon delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam, as Erskine took Game 2 via the run rule, 14-6.
THE PLAYER
Gabby Burroughs hit a pair of home runs in Game 1, including a go-ahead, two-run big fly in the fourth inning to lead the Erskine offense in the opener. Burroughs also tallied an RBI in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
