Erskine Men's Basketball | Fleet drop heartbreaker to Barton in 2023 home finale

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's basketball team (1-7, 0-3 CC) was defeated by Barton College (5-5, 2-0 CC) by a score of 63-62 at Belk Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After leading by five at the break, Erskine saw the visiting Bulldogs climb back into the lead at the 15:40 mark of the second half. From that point on, neither team led by more than five points, as the game came down to the wire. The Fleet kept themselves well within striking distance with timely buckets all afternoon, none more so than a three-point play from senior Jalen Robinson to cut the Barton lead to one, 62-61, with 33 seconds left. Barton missed the front end of a one-and-one 12 seconds later to give the Fleet a chance to take the lead. With just 7 seconds remaining, redshirt freshman Max Peeler was fouled and landed awkwardly on his side, sending him to the free throw line. Peeler made the first to tie the game but an Erskine foul on the rebound after the second free throw gave Barton an opportunity to regain the lead. The Bulldogs missed the first but made the second and Erskine was unable to get a clean look in the final seconds as Barton escaped with a one-point win.
