DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's basketball team (1-2) defeated Mars Hill University (1-3) by a score of 67-66 at Belk Arena on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Christian Monroe totaled a career-high 13 points, including a game-winning layup with 2.6 seconds remaining.
The Fleet trailed by five at the half, but started the comeback right at the onset of the second half. A steal and a layup by
Jaylen Prioleau at the 12:53 mark gave Erskine its first lead of the second period, as the senior made some huge plays to lead the comeback effort.
Moses Cheek scored five straight points for the Flying Fleet that opened up a 65-60 lead with just over a minute left. However, Mars Hill answered with a 6-0 spurt in the next fifty seconds to go in front, 66-65, with just 9.9 seconds remaining. But, on the ensuing possession, Erskine broke the initial pressure and Prioleau handed off for Monroe, who put his head down and drove in across the lane before finishing on the other side of the rim in the final seconds to seal the win.
