THE SERIES
Erskine leads the all-time series 36-21.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Erskine jumped out to an early lead thanks to RBI singles from
Ashby Smith and
Cal Bocchino in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. But, Barton exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth as they sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning to take a convincing 7-2 lead. The Erskine offense wasted no time starting a comeback in the bottom of the fourth. After singles from
Cal Kryska and
Armando Becerra and a stolen base, Bocchino delivered again with a two-run single to cut into the Bulldogs lead. Smith followed a few batters later with a sacrifice fly to score Bocchino as Erskine scored three times in their half of the fourth but still trailed, 7-5.
Ira Clifton,
Blake Johnson, and
Harry Bernard combined to hold Barton off the board in the middle innings and Erskine got a run closer in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI double from
Kane Fisher. Fisher advanced to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there and the Fleet went quietly in their last two at-bats, meaning Barton took the final game of the series, 7-6.
THE PLAYER
Cal Bocchino was for 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and scored a pair of runs to lead the Fleet offense.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine will continue conference play next weekend with a road trip to another formidable team in the league, Francis Marion University (13-8, 3-6 CC) starting on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Sparrow Stadium.
