MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (1-8-1, 1-5-1 CC) was defeated by Chowan University (4-4-2, 4-1-1 CC) by a score of 9-2 on Monday afternoon at the Chowan Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Benjamin Martinez picked up his first career brace with goals in the 2nd and 62nd minutes.

THE MATCH
In a game originally scheduled for this past weekend but moved due to Hurricane Ian, the visiting Fleet came flying out of the gates against the reigning Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Hawks. Andres Rojas connected with Benjamin Martinez in just the 2nd minute as the freshman added to his goal tally and gave Erskine an early 1-0 lead. But, the Hawks responded and scored twice inside 80 seconds to flip the Erskine lead on its head into a 2-1 deficit. The Hawks began to take control of the match, adding five more goals in the opening half and taking a commanding lead. Martinez found the back of the net again in the 62nd minute for his first collegiate brace, but Chowan won by a score of 9-2.

THE PLAYER
Benjamin Martinez scored both of Erskine's goals, bringing his season tally to four in his freshman campaign.

THE TEAM
Erskine was outshot by Chowan 21 to 5, and the Hawks had a 13 to 2 advantage in shots on target.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine is back in action Wednesday evening as they host North Greenville University (5-4-2, 3-2-2 CC) at 7:30 p.m. NGU beat the Fleet 2-0 in the meeting last year in Tigerville, but Isaac White's first-half goal was the difference in a 1-0 win in the Spring 2021 season, the last time the teams met in Due West.
