DUE WEST, S.C. – In their first match outside of tournament play on the season, the Fleet fell at home to the visiting Lander Bearcats 3-0. The Fleet looked good at points during the match and played well overall but fell in a hard fought match where the the final set totals did not tell the true story.
MATCH 1 vs West Georgia
Set 1: In set number 1, the Fleet struggled to gain a commanding grip on the set as they were plagued with service errors, which seemed to give confidence to the Bearcat squad. The Fleet fought hard but ended up losing the set 25-22, despite a late push.
Set 2: The Fleet started off strong in set number 2 and seemed to take control early. Midway through the set, the Bearcats went on a 8-0 run to pull away and leave the Fleet down 17-9. However, the Fleet did not give up and fought all the way back to within a point at 24-23, but on an attack from a Lander hitter that fell just out of reach of the Fleet defenders, the Bearcats took the set 25-23. The Fleet were fueled in set number 2 by strong serving across the board.
Set 3: The Fleet seemed to be out of energy to start set number 3 as they found themselves behind 7-0 to start the match. The Fleet tried hard to fight back behind some strong play from
Kaile Tuisamatatele on both sides of the net, but the Fleet eventually fell 25-22.
