THE SERIES
Emmanuel now leads the all-time series 8-5 and the Lions have won the last seven meetings between the teams.
THE MATCH
Set 1:Â The teams traded points to open the match and a
Lainie Loving kill gave the Fleet a 10-8 lead. But, the Emmanuel offense rattled off 10-1 scoring run and took a commanding lead. Loving,
Jauhna Smith, and
Zion Dowis all had kills late in the set, but the deficit proved to be too much as Emmanuel took the first set 25-16.
Â
Set 2:Â Reilly Bartlett began the second set with three consecutive aces, and moments later, a Bartlett kill put Erskine up 7-3. But, Emmanuel won the next seven points and took their first lead of the set. The Fleet responded by winning the next three points capped by a Smith kill and both teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the set. With Erskine trailing 23-22, the Fleet took a timeout and won the ensuing two points, which set up a single set point. Emmanuel won the point and won the next Fleet set point just moments after. But, Erskine finished off the Lions in Set 2 with kills from Loving and
Katy Torgerson to tie the match at one apiece with a 27-25 victory in Set 2.
Â
Set 3:Â Emmanuel won eight of the first nine points in Set 3, and never looked back. The Fleet got as close as three points, but the Lions took a commanding 25-16 win in the third set and had a 2-1 lead in the match. Erskine had a pair of kills from Smith, Torgerson, and Loving in the set.
Set 4: Bartlett began Set 4 the same way she began the second set, as Erskine won the first six points behind three aces from Bartlett. The Lions went on a run and narrowed the Fleet lead to just one point, but a Loving ace capped a 6-0 Erskine run to give the Fleet's lead some cushion. Erskine maintained that comfortable lead and rattled off four straight points toward the end of the set, including a
Kaile Tuisamatatele ace, and took a 24-16 lead. Emmanuel held on for a bit, but a Loving kill sealed a 25-20 win in Set 4 and sent the match to a fifth set.
Set 5: The teams shared the first four points before Emmanuel held a narrow 5-3 lead. Erskine won the next two points as a Loving ace tied the match at 5. But, Emmanuel followed with a 7-1 scoring run and took a commanding 12-6 lead. A Torgerson kill and a Bartlett ace late kept the Fleet alive, but Emmanuel took the fifth set by a score of 15-10.
