HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Erskine's opening drive saw the Fleet move the ball, but a fumble ended the possession and Newberry cashed in on the short field, but a failed trick play on the extra point kept the Wolves' lead to 6-0. The Fleet answered right back as
Craig Pender found
Senika McKie and
J.C. Correll for first-down receptions and Pender finished the drive with an eight-yard toss to Devante Roberson as Erskine took a 7-6 lead. The Wolves' ensuing drive ended on a Jaml Barron interception, but the Fleet went three-and-out and gave the ball right back to Newberry. Newberry regained the lead on a 28-yard touchdown, but failed the two-point attempt, making it a 12-7 game after the first quarter.
Â
Second Quarter:
But the Wolves scored twice in a span of three plays and extended their lead to 26-7 less than two minutes into the second quarter. A blocked punt moments later led to another Newberry touchdown drive and a 28-yard touchdown run gave the hosts a 40-7 halftime lead.
Â
Third Quarter:
Newberry continued to pour it on, opening the third quarter with eight straight runs before an 18-yard passing touchdown put the Wolves up 47-7. Erskine gained on a first down on the ensuing drive, but were forced to punt and another long Newberry touchdown drive gave the Wolves a 54-7 lead.
Â
Fourth Quarter:
Correy Massey recovered a fumble on the first play of the final quarter, and Whitfield ran for a pair of first downs before a McKie 13-yard reception moved the Fleet into Wolves' territory. Pender connected with McKie again for a first down on a fourth down, and two plays later,
Josh Heatley found the endzone from five yards out to make it a 54-14 game.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet are back home next Saturday as they take on Fort Valley State University (1-0) at 4:00 p.m.
