THE SERIES
Mount Olive controls the all-time series 40-10 after taking three of four in Due West this weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1: Mount Olive scored a run in the first and third innings as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Fleet responded with a run in the bottom half of the third inning on a
Dalton Reeves' RBI single. But, the Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to push their lead to 4-1. Again, Erskine scored in the bottom half; this time when
Livan Reinoso scampered home on a wild pitch. Mount Olive continued to keep the Fleet at arms length when a two-run single from the Trojans in the sixth inning extended the lead to 6-2. Erskine refused to go quietly and got both runs back in the bottom half when
Dalton Boyd launched a two-run home run over the right center field fence.
Michael Kay kept the deficit where it was with a scoreless top of the seventh, and Erskine had the tying run on base, but could not finish the rally as they fell 6-4 in Game 3 of the series.
GAME 2: The Trojans put the final game of the series beyond doubt very quickly, striking for seven runs in the first inning, six in the second, and five more in the third as they jumped out to a commanding 18-0 lead after just three innings. The Fleet got on the board in the fourth inning when
Livan Reinoso launched his 13th big fly of the year, a solo blast to straightaway left field. The Fleet scored more in the fifth inning as
Gregory Sanders,
Peniel Sabino, and a Reinoso all had run-scoring hits trim the deficit a bit to 18-4. Mount Olive got all four runs back in their half of the sixth inning, and
Jacob White's solo home run in the seventh along with Reinoso's RBI groundout finished the scoring in a 22-6 rout as the Trojans finished off a series win in Due West.
THE PLAYER
GAME 1: Dalton Boyd had just one hit, but it was a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Fleet a late boost in Game 1.
GAME 2:
Livan Reinoso was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a solo home run in the fourth inning to get the Fleet on the board.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine will be on the road in the midweek as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University (9-26, 7-23 CC) for a doubleheader on Wednesday to finish an unusual four-game series against the Warriors.Â
Game 1 is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The teams split a doubleheader last Wednesday to begin the series.
