THE SERIES
Erskine improves to 3-0 versus the Hawks all-time. Two of the three victories coming since Chowan joined Conference Carolinas in 2019 and the other, a neutral site five set win in 2011.
THE MATCH
Set 1:Â The first set quickly got out of a hand as Chowan used a 14-0 run to put the set out of reach 20-4. Chowan took the first set 25-8, but that's as far as they'd get.
Â
Set 2:Â Off their momentum in the first, the Hawks opened the second set by securing the first three points. The Fleet responded with an extended 10-3 run to gain the lead. The second set was one of runs as both teams had at least a 5-0 of their own, the most important of which was the Fleet's 5-0 stretch to close out the second set, 25-20.
Â
Set 3:Â The first point of the third set went to the Hawks, but very few would follow. Similar to the opening set, a 13-1 run separated the teams as it was the Fleet this time who were on the right side of the stretch to lead 18-6. The Fleet once again used a 5-0 run to close the set, this time winning convincingly 25-9.
Â
Set 4: Erskine opened the fourth and final set with a pair of Lanie Loving kills to set the pace of the set. Loving collected two other kills within the set, the last of which gave Erskine a 16-13 lead. The Fleet's 5-0 run to end the fourth set was interrupted off a service error, but Erskine closed out the set and match, 25-20.
THE PLAYER
Rebecca Massengill neared a double-double with eight kills and 10 digs. The senior hit .172 with a block and ace thrown in as well.
Â
THE TEAM
Erskine hit .108 (41 K / 23 E / 167 TA) for the match and a match-best .279 (16 K / 4 E / 43 TA) in the third set. The Fleet produced 10 aces, and edged the Hawks by one in both digs (96-95) and blocks (6-5).
Â
WHAT'S NEXT?Â
The Fleet remain on the road when they travel to North Greenville University (4-0, 4-0 CC) on Thursday, March 18 at 5 p.m.
