DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College women's basketball team (0-8, 0-6 CC) faced off against the Crusaders of North Greenville (2-6, 2-3 CC) in a Conference Carolinas rivalry matchup. The Fleet came out hot, jumping out to an 11-5 lead to start the game, and closing out the 1st quarter leading 18-15. The Fleet shot very well from behind the arc in this game, and continued that hot shooting through the 2nd and 3rd quarters to maintain a 3 point lead going into the 4th. The game stayed tight down the stretch and the Fleet took the lead by 2 on a clutch 3 pointer by
Anzya Cook with less than a minute to play. The Fleet followed that up with a strong defensive stop, forcing the Crusaders to foul, but when the Fleet were called for a double-dribble on a possession that clearly looked to be a foul, North Greenville was given the opportunity to tie the game and send it into overtime. In overtime, the Fleet fell into an early hole and were not able to rebound. The Fleet eventually fell, 64-59.
THE PLAYER
Amaya Richardson, Anzya Cook and Shanece Mitchell lead the Fleet statistically and on the floor. Richardson chalked up 14 and 11 rebounds to go along with a steal, Cook led the team from the point guard spot all night and had more impact that the stat sheets showed, adding 11 points and 10 rebounds to the Fleet totals. Mitchell, who led all scorers in the game, had 15 points to go along with 2 steals and 1 highlight reel block.
THE TEAM
Erskine shot 21-63 (33.3%) from the floor and was 9-29 (31.0%) from beyond the arc. The Fleet shot 8-14 (57.1%) from the foul line in the game.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet will face Southern Wesleyan University in Belk Arena on Wednesday, December 15th at 5:00 PM.
