THE SERIES
Tuesday was just the second ever official meeting between the teams with Erskine winning the first in Greenville in 2019. The Fleet also won an exhibition against the Bruins last year.
THE MATCH
Erskine and Bob Jones played free-flowing soccer for the first half, with both sides creating chances. The Bruins actually found the back of the net in the 26th minute but the goal was called back due to a foul in the build-up. Then, the Fleet went down the field moments later and appeared to have earned a penalty on a handball in the box, but after the center referee discussed with his linesman, the decision was overturned, keeping the match scoreless. Erskine's best chance of the half came in the final minutes when
Lauren Mullen had a one-on-one but could not beat the BJU goalkeeper as the match went into the halftime break scoreless. Erskine dominated the second half but struggled to find a breakthrough. The Fleet outshot the Bruins seven to one and had two shots on target in the final 45 minutes. None were bigger than
Vivian Gonzalez's in the final seconds of regulation. Gonzalez received the ball on the right, cut back on her left foot and let off a high-arcing, curving shot that looked destined for the back of the net before the Bruins' goalkeeper jumped straight up and palmed the ball over the crossbar to send the match to overtime. The first overtime period had a lack of chance creation, but the Bruins had a golden opportunity late to steal a winner. Mia Marks was played clean through behind the Erskine defense in the 96th minute and was one-on-one with
Abby McElveen. But, McElveen was quick off her line to close the angle and stopped Marks' shot by getting it stuck between her feet to keep Erskine alive heading into a second overtime. The Fleet had both of the shots in the second overtime but neither threatened the Bruins' goal as Erskine was held by Bob Jones, 0-0.
THE PLAYER
Abby McElveen earned her second clean sheet in four days, saving the only Bruins' shot on target.
THE TEAM
Erskine outshot Bob Jones 17 to seven and had a six to one advantage in shots on target.
