Fleet men's volleyball stepped away from Conference Carolinas play and hosted Bluefield College in Belk Arena on Monday evening. The Fleet swept Bluefield, winning 25-15, 25-15, 25-21.
Caleb Slater gave Erskine a lead early in the first set with an ace from the service line to push the Fleet to a 4-3 advantage, a lead they wouldn't give up for the remainder of the set.
Abel De Jesus rattled off four consecutive serves to increase the lead 13-7, and the Fleet would go on to take the set 25-16.
Francisco Pomar started off the second set with a strong service run for the Fleet, giving them a four point margin they wouldn't give up. Aces from Jake Whyte and strong defensive play for the Fleet would give them a 25-15 victory in the second set, holding the Rams to a -0.063 kill percentage on the set and earning an impressive .657 kill percentage of their own. The third set was a different story, with ten tie scores and seventeen lead changes throughout the set. A mid-game serving run from
Jason Sall and strong offensive play from Whyte and Slater boosted the Fleet to the 25-21 third set victory, giving the Fleet the 3-0 sweep.
The Fleet earned a .507 hitting average on the night had four attackers over the .500 kill percentage: Sall (.500) had nine kills, Slater (.700) added eight more kills and two aces, De Jesus (.800) totaled four kills, and Arrowood (.600) added three kills in his set one performance. Whyte hit .450 with a team high ten kills and three aces. Pomar tallied 35 assists through the three sets and a service ace and
Justin Rendon earned a team high of four digs.
The Fleet return to Conference Carolinas action with a trip to Mount Olive on Friday, March 13.
