Flying Fleet beach volleyball traveled to St. Leo University to play in a tri-match against the home team, St. Leo, and visiting UT Martin on Monday afternoon. The Fleet dropped both duals 5-0 in their second day of competition.
vs St. Leo: The Fleet faced off against St. Leo in the first match-up of the day.
Allison Dutterer and
Taylor Atkinson paired up in an exhibition match and after dropping the first set, pushed St. Leo to extra points, but ultimately fell 25-23. Pairs No. 4 and No. 5 fell in straight sets giving St. Leo a 2-0 lead heading into the second wave. Pairs No. 1 and No. 2 also fell in straight sets, securing St. Leo's victory.
Marissa Possenriede and
Emily Gilbert competed at the No. 3 pair and managed to push the Lions to a third set. They dropped the first set 21-17 but came back to take a 21-14 victory in the second before falling 15-6 in the third, giving St. Leo a 5-0 win over the Fleet.
vs UT Martin: In the second dual of the day, the Fleet took on UT Martin. The exhibition pair of Donald/McKean fell in straight sets, but pairs No. 1-5 saw some line up changes for the Fleet. Dutterer/Atkinson claimed the No. 5 spot with Garner/Petrovich moving to the No. 4 position. Both teams fell in straight sets and UT Martin took a 2-0 lead heading into the second wave of competition. Gilbert/Possenriede remained at the No. 3 spot;
Morgan Browne teamed up with
Laney Gaston at the No. 2 pair and
Campbell Atkins paired with
Olivia Browne at the No. 1 spot. M. Browne/Gaston forced UT Martin to a third set after their 21-19 victory in the second, but ultimately fell 15-12 in the third set. UT Martin claimed the dual 5-0.
The Fleet return to action March 13 and 14 with a trip to Salisbury, NC, to face off in the Catawba Beach Classic at Catawba College.
