Flying Fleet Beach Volleyball traveled to Lakeland, Florida, to take on Florida Southern College and St. John's River State College in the program's first ever collegiate competition. The Fleet went 1-1 on the day, dropping their first dual against Florida Southern 4-1 and winning the second dual with a 5-0 sweep over St. John's River.
vs. Florida Southern: In the first wave of competition against Florida Southern, pairs No. 4 and No. 5 pushed the Mocs to a third set. No. 4, Mallory Carter and Allie Carter, won the first set 22-20, dropped the second set 21-9 and came within two points of taking the third, falling 15-13. No. 5 Karina Petrovich and Maisy Garner dropped the first set 17-21, but came back with a reverse sweep to take sets two and three 21-12 and 16-14 for the Fleet's only point of the dual. No. 1 through No. 3 fell in straight sets to the Mocs, giving them the 4-1 victory.
vs. St. John's River State: The second competition of the day went much better for the Fleet. Pairs No. 4 and No. 5 won in straight sets, with Petrovich/Garner winning in commanding fashion 21-7 and 21-11 and Carter/Carter winning 21-13 and 21-19. Pair No. 2, Laney Gaston and Campbell Atkins were the first to finish their match in the second wave, claiming the third set 15-7 and securing the dual in favor of the Fleet. At the No. 3 pair, Gilbert/Possenriede took the first set 21-16 but dropped the second 21-19. They came back in the third set to take a 15-8 victory, giving Erskine a 4-0 lead in the dual. Browne/Browne took the first set on court one 21-14 but dropped a close second 21-18. They took a 15-11 victory in the third set, securing the 5-0 sweep for the Flying Fleet.
The Fleet head to St. Leo on Monday, March 2 to take on St. Leo and UT Martin in another tri match.
