DUE WEST, S.C. – Dennis Cole scored a pair of second half goals after
Corentin Serbource opened the scoring in the first half to secure a 3-0 win over Carolina University in the NCCAA South Regional Saturday afternoon.
"I figured out who some gamers were and that was a pleasant surprise," head coach
Warren Turner said after the Fleet win.
The Fleet played in their first match of the season and needed a win to earn a spot in the NCCAA National Tournament which begins Nov. 16. After a physical but uneventful opening 15 minutes, the game began to open up.
Corentin Serbource tapped in a goalkeeper parry from close range to start the scoring for the Fleet in the 22nd minute.
Tim Boeckstaens was played through and after his initial shot was saved, Serbource pounced on the rebound and slotted the ball in the top right corner.
Erskine maintained that 1-0 lead going into the halftime break. Senior
Dennis Cole wasted no time giving the Fleet some breathing room in the second half. Just 52 seconds into the half, Cole made a run between two Carolina defenders and was played through with a ball that took a deflection on the way through. Cole adjusted to the redirect and rounded the Bruins keeper before tapping home Erskine's second goal.
Cole sealed the victory 11 minutes later with a beautiful, curling free kick into the top left corner of the goal from about 30 yards out.
Senior goalkeeper
Seth Perez earned his first clean sheet of his Fleet career and made three saves in the process.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet advance to the NCCAA National Tournament, which begins November 16 in Kissimeee, Florida.
