BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (1-0, 1-0 CC) picked up its first win of the 2021 campaign off an own goal in the seventh minute to beat King University (0-1, 0-1 CC) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

THE SERIES
The Fleet picked up its third straight win over King today and now have 10 points in the last five fixtures. Erskine has outscored King 12-8 over the past five meetings.

THE MATCH
Within the first two minutes, both teams had a shot registered, it was Erskine's second shot, however, that made the difference in the match. Albert Portas drew a penalty at the 6:13 mark leaving him the early opportunity to push the Fleet forward. Portas went bottom left and the shot was saved by Tornado keeper Dalton Gammon, but not for long. During the King clearance the ball found the back of the net for an own goal. The Fleet were cautioned just once in the opening half and took their 1-0 lead into the break. Erskine built off its nine first half shots and put 10 more up in the second half forcing Gammon to make four saves. Erskine keeper Evan Zizek kept the Tornado in check allowing the Fleet a 1-0 victory in their season opener.
 
MAN OF THE MATCH
Erskine's number 10, Albert Portas, applied the most pressure to the Tornado keeper. Portas took six shots, with four being on goal in his 61 minutes logged.
 
THE TEAM
The Fleet took a flurry of shots (19), with 11 being on goal. Erskine collected six corner kicks and allowed the Tornado just one true scoring opportunity.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet return home to play at Huggins Field for the first time this season when they host Lees-McRae College (0-2, 0-1 CC) on Sunday, March 7 at 4:30 p.m.

Last season the Fleet earned a 3-2 road victory in Banner Elk which stopped a four match Bobcat winning streak.
