Due West, SC – Erskine held off a late rally by Southern Wesleyan to take a 6-3 victory over the Warriors Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Conference Carolinas baseball series.
Henry Faunce would line a two run double in the bottom of the first to give Erskine the lead. Southern Wesleyan would take advantage of an Erskine error in the second to cut the lead in half. Erskine would answer in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by
Kyle Heiss. Leading 4-2 in the seventh,
Destin Nichols would double to right center and score on a single by Heiss.
AJ Fabrizio would single to left and advance to second on an error that allowed Heiss to score and make it a 6-2 game. The Warriors would score a run in the ninth but it would not be enough as Erskine would hold on for the win.
Chase Watts was 3-3 with a double and run scored to lead the Fleet while Heiss was 2-4 with two RBI's. Nichols finished the game 2-5 with a double and run scored.
Alex Calvert (6-1) picked up the win allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out nine in six innings of work.
Joe Johnson (3) got the three inning save allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.
