Due West – The Erskine College Flying Fleet defeated the University of Mount Olive Trojans in dramatic fashion tonight 67-66. The Fleet move to 12-10 overall on the season and 9-7 in Conference Carolinas play.
The first half was eerily similar for both teams. Each team made 12 baskets, and Mount Olive shot 42.9% to Erskine's 41.4%. Erskine was led by
Joby Glymph with 12 points, and
Brannon Dark and
Ray Lock each added 8 points. Tayon Gleaves scored 11 in the first half for the Trojans.
The second half was another back and forth battle. Mount Olive had a 5 points lead with about 2 minutes to go before Erskine went on the attack. Mount Olive inbounded the ball with :39 left in the game and ran the shot clock down to 2 before taking a shot. The shot was off the mark, and Erskine secured the rebound and pushed up court. A missed shot landed in the hands of Joby Glymp and his put back attempt was off the mark, but he was fouled. The junior from Lexington stepped to the line with ice in the veins and sank both free throws. Mount Olives half court heave at the buzzer went off the mark.
Joby Glymph added another 12 points to push his total to 24.
Ray Lock added 7 points in the second half to give him a total of 15, and
Brannon Dark scored 9 more to push his total to 17.
Erskine returns to the hardwood next Wednesday when they travel to Tigerville, SC to take on North Greenville. The game time is set for 7:30.
