Due West – The Erskine College Flying Fleet defeated the Pfeiffer University Falcons 79-71 tonight in Belk Arena. The victory moves the Fleet to 8-9 overall and 5-6 in Conference Carolinas play.
The Fleet played great on the offensive end and the defensive end in the first half. Erskine was led by
Ray Lock's four 3-pointers and 16 points total. Erskine's 8 offensive rebounds were crucial to extra possessions and 2
nd chance points. On offense Erskine shot 46.2% from the field and 37.5% from behind the arc. Pfeiffer shot 48% from the field but got off 14 less shots than the Fleet did.
Blake Maness, straight off his game winner against Lees McRae, scored 10 points and notched 4 rebounds to help the Fleet push out to a 46-28 half-time advantage.
In the second half, Pfeiffer found their rhythm offensively.
Joby Glymph attributed that to Pfeiffer just trying to take advantage of their size more. "They just tried to put the ball on the deck more and get to the rim. We had to just hold our ground and defend." Erskine's offense slowed slightly, as they were trying to stave off a Falcon comeback. For the game Pfeiffer shot 47.3% to Erskine's 41.9%, but the game isn't won on the stat sheet only on the scoreboard.
Ray Lock's 31 points, 21 coming from three-point land, were very instrumental in the Fleet victory.
Erskine returns to action tomorrow night when they host the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. Game time is set for 7:30.
