Wallace, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet concluded their regular season by winning the 15 team Campbell Oil/Sunoco Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina-Pembroke on the River Course at the River Landing Country Club (Par 72, 6,942 yards).
Entering today's third round Erskine sat in fourth place, seven strokes behind Queen's University. The Fleet fired their best round of the tournament, a 293, to win the tournament two strokes ahead of Queens University.
Ford Blanchard (Orangeburg, SC, Orangeburg Preparatory Schools) and
Paul Fitzgerald (Charlotte, NC, Providence Day ) led the charge up the leaderboard, both carding a one under par (71) in the final round.
Blanchard led the Fleet into the clubhouse, finishing third overall with a 73-78-71-221 for the tournament. The senior finished four strokes back of the tournament champion, J.C. McFadyen of UNC-Pembroke.
For Fitzgerald, he finished 17
th overall with a 77-76-71-224.
Senior
Brad Thorne (Moore, SC, Oakbrook Preparatory School) followed Blanchard into the clubhouse, overcoming a disappointing 78 in the first round to fire a par 72 and 73 in the final two rounds. Thorne finished twelfth overall.
Tyler Lucas (Rock Hill, SC, Northwestern High School) rounded out the scoring for the Flying Fleet, shooting a third round total of 74-74-78-226 to place 26
th overall.
This tournament concludes the Fleet's regular season. Erskine will now play defend their title in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament starting April 19
th.
