St. Augustine, Fla. – After an opening round placed them in seventh place, the Erskine Men's Golf Team steadily climbed up the leaderboard to finish third in the 14-team Jay Jennison Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Flagler University at The Palencia Club (Par 72, 7073 yards).
Playing two rounds on Monday, the Flying Fleet shot an opening round of 300 and tied for seventh place. The Fleet ended the day with a 294 to move up two spots into fifth place. Sophomore
Paul Fitzgerald (Charlotte, NC, Providence Day ) shot a one over par in both rounds to lead the Fleet after two rounds while senior
Brad Thorne (Moore, SC, Oakbrook Preparatory School) and junior
Tyler Lucas (Rock Hill, SC, Northwestern High School) helped the Fleet climb the leaderboard by firing an even par in the second round.
In today's final round, the Flying Fleet fired another round of 294 to move into a tie for third place with fellow conference member Limestone College. The Fleet finished three back of second place Wingate University and fifteen strokes back of host Flagler University who won the tournament.
For the Fleet, Fitzgerald ended the tournament with a one under par in the round to finish in fifth place. Senior
Ford Blanchard (Orangeburg, SC, Orangeburg Preparatory Schools) also closed out the tournament with a one under par to finish tied with Thorne in ninth place. Junior Cameron Ford edged Lucas by a stroke to finish in 30
th place and complete the scoring for Erskine.
Wingate's Benedict Gebhardt won individual medalist honors, firing a four under par for the three-round tournament.
Erskine will travel next week to play in the King University Invitational in Bristol, Tennessee at the Country Club of Bristol.
