Erskine wins rain-shortened Kiawah Island Invitational

Kiawah Island, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet won a rain-shortened 17-team Kiawah Island Invitational hosted at Cougar Point Country Club (6,875 yards, Par 72) by the University of South Carolina-Aiken (USC-Aiken).

The teams attempted to play through the weather today but after the third rain delay today's round was cancelled.  Per rule, the standings revert to the last completed round.  Erskine and Flagler were declared co-champions since they were leading after Monday's opening day first round.

The Flying Fleet shot a five under par in winning their second tournament of the year.  Four Flying Fleet golfers finished under par, led by Ford Blanchard's two under par and ninth place finish.  The Fleet's next three golfers, Cameron Ford (Bridgeport, WV, Bridgeport High School), Brad Thorne (Moore, SC, Oakbrook Preparatory School) and Tyler Lucas (Rock Hill, SC, Northwestern High School), all fired a one under par.  The Fleet's fifth golfer Paul Fitzgerald (Charlotte, NC, Providence Day ) was not fair behind, shooting a one over par and in 23rd place.

Armstrong State's Cory Griffin won the tournament, firing a five under par, a stroke ahead of four other golfers.

USC-Aiken came in third place while Lincoln Memorial and Armstrong State rounded out the top five.

Erskine will attempt their third straight tournament next week at the Jennison Memorial Tournament hosted by Flagler College at the Palencia Club.
