Due West, S.C. – The Pfeiffer University Falcons (12-3, 5-2) barely avoided an upset by the Erskine Flying Fleet (2-13, 1-4), edging the Fleet 5 to 4 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
All three doubles matches were decided by just one game with Pfeiffer winning two matches. Erskine's #1 doubles pair of
Jason Harris (Benoni, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) and
Wilson Mathewes (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) clipped Pfeiffer's Loic Minery and Sebastian Wernecke 9 to 8. Pfeiffer won the other two matches by the same score setting up an exciting showdown in the six singles doubles.
The two teams split the six singles giving Pfeiffer the slim 5 to 4 victory. Harris and Mathewes triumphed in straight sets at #2 and #3 singles.
Andre Andre (Setubal, Portugal) fought back from a disappointing first set to win the last two sets 7-6, 7-6 for the Fleet's fourth point. Erskine's best opportunity for the decisive fifth point was at #5 singles where
Alan Pearce (Greenville, SC, Mauldin High School) lost in three sets.
Erskine will travel to Gaffney, South Carolina, on Saturday to play in-state conference foe Limestone College.
