Box Score Due West, S.C. - In tonight's stunning women's volleyball match, the Lees-McRae Bobcats (17-9, 10-5) sank the Erskine Flying Fleet (18-7, 14-1) in five sets, 3 to 2, for their first conference loss in women's volleyball action at Belk Arena. With all five sets close (25-21, 26-28, 29-27, 19-25, 13-15) the match was not decided until the final point.
The Fleet got double-doubles from their two offensive leaders senior
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) and junior
Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School). Sullivan recorded her first career double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs, while Bullock had 16 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter
Kristen Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) also chipped in a double-double with 48 assists and 12 digs.
The Bobcats were led by junior outside hitter Jariliz Cott
é who tallied a double-double with game-highs of 23 kills and 26 digs.
The two teams alternated winning the first four sets to set up the fifth set showdown. Again the set was not decided until the final stages. After trailing by three early in the set, the Fleet kept their composure to tie the game at 13 to 13 on a kill and a block by Sullivan. The Bobcat got back-to-back kills from Jordan Banta, who finished with 11 kills, 9 digs and 9 blocks, to seal the upset.
Following the game, Erskine honored their three graduating seniors Bullock,
Emily Kennington (Jefferson, SC, Central High School) and
Megan Johnson (Little River, SC, Scholars Academy). Bullock departs as Erskine's all-time career kill leader. Kennington has come in as a key back row player for the Fleet, averaging 2.18 digs per set on the season while Johnson, who has played both defensive specialist and setter, has 632 career assists while averaging 2.29 digs per set last season.
Erskine wraps up their regular season against King University tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
