Box Score Due West, S.C. – #1 Wingate University Bulldogs (31-2) defeated #8 Erskine Flying Fleet (21-9) 3 to 0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-17) tonight in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Southeast Regional Women's Volleyball Tournament at Cuddy Arena.
Midway through all three sets tonight, it seemed the Wingate Bulldogs found another gear offensively to pull away from the Flying Fleet. After the Flying Fleet rattled off three consecutive points, two coming on back-to-back kills by junior
Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School), to tie the first set at 11, Wingate used a 14-8 run to win the first set 25 to 19.
Again in the second set, the Fleet trailed by just one point at 10 to 9 when the Bulldogs got four straight kills, three coming from Cory McGowan, to ignite a 15 to 5 run.
Down 0-2, the Fleet came out strong in the third set behind a couple of kills from their senior outside hitter
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School). The Bulldogs unleashed their offensive might, pounding out four straight points. Head Coach Heather Vahjen called a timeout to regroup her squad but despite the Fleet's best efforts, Wingate held on to win the match.
Sullivan led the Fleet with 8 kills while Bullock finished with 7 kills. Sophomore setter
Kristen Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) recorded yet another double-double with 22 assists and 15 digs. She also had 6 kills.
The Bulldogs were led by Susie Murach's game-high 12 kills.
With the loss, the Flying Fleet's historic season comes to a close. The Fleet set a new school record for wins in a season at 21, won their first-ever Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship, and earned their first trip to the NCAA postseason tournament. Individually the Fleet also set new marks. Bullock ended her career as the Flying Fleet's all-time career kills leader with 1,174 kills while Dodge established a new single season record by averaging 10.19 assists per set.
