The Fleet rebounds to slay the Saints 3 to 2

Box Score Gaffney, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (16-6, 12-0) rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to slay the Saints of Limestone College (10-15, 8-3) 3 to 2 (18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15, 20-18) this morning in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball action at the Timkin Center.

After allowing Limestone to hit for .322 in the first two sets, Erskine tightened their defensive to hold Limestone to just a .120 hitting percentage over the last three sets, including just a .042 hitting percentage in the fourth set, to stage the thrilling comeback victory.

Junior middle hitter Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School) had 11 of her 16 kills over the last three sets to spark the Fleet offensively.  Senior outside hitter Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) produced her third double-double of the season with a team-high 17 kills and 13 digs.  She also 3 assists, 2 aces and 2 blocks in filling up the stat sheet.  Freshman Catherine McAlister (Charleston, SC, Bishop England School) continues to improve her play, contributing 10 kills, 4 digs and 2 blocks in the win.

After winning the first two sets, the Saints were well on their way to a three-game sweep of the conference-leading Fleet, leading 18 to 10 in the third set.  Bullock blasted a kill that ignited a 13 to 5 run by Erskine.  With the game tied 23 to 23, Erskine forced Limestone to hit wide then following a Saint time out, Bullock knocked down the game winner to send the game to a fourth set.

Erskine found their rhythm in the fourth set, hammering Limestone 25 to 15 behind four kills from Sullivan and three by McAlister.  Sophomore Marissa Greenough (Laguna Beach, CA, Laguna Beach High School) contributed three service aces as well.  Defensively, Erskine held Limestone to just six kills in the set.

With the game knotted at two sets each, the decisive fifth set proved to be a classic nail-bitter with the Flying Fleet prevailing in extra points 20 to 18.  Trailing 14 to 12, the Fleet fought off two game-points to tie the game at 14 each on back-to-back kills by Sullivan and McAlister.  The two teams exchanged four points apiece.  With the game knotted at 18 to 18, the Fleet got another timely kill from Sullivan then forced a Saint attack error to clinch the impressive comeback victory 3 to 2.

The Saints were led by Darla Svoboda's game-high 20 kills while teammate Regan Youngs had 13 kills with 9 digs.

With four conference games remaining, Erskine can clinch the #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with two wins against North Greenville University and Southern Wesleyan University next weekend.  Erskine holds a one game lead over Southern Wesleyan (18-6, 9-1) having defeated the Warriors on the road 3 to 1 back on October 11th.  Erskine hosts NGU Friday night starting at 7:00 p.m. and SWU on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
