Box Score Banner Elk, N.C. – Erskine (8-4, 3-1) exploded in the second half to bury to the Bobcats of Lees-McRae (6-7, 1-2) 89 to 72 in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action at Williams Gymnasium. The Flying Fleet have now won their last three games in a row.
With the game tied at intermission 40 to 40, Erskine shot a blisteringly 58.8% from the field to outscore Lees-McRae 49 to 32 in the second half. Senior
Mike Gabbard (Erlanger, KY, Boone County High School) led the second half charge, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the half.
After six lead changes and three ties, Erskine appeared to seize control of the game midway through the first period. Sophomore
Roderick Perkins (Smyrna, GA, Campbell High School) capped a Fleet 8-0 run with a thundering dunk while drawing the foul. He made the subsequent free throw to complete the 3-point play.
In the final two minutes, Lees-McRae concluded the half on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 40 each. Josh Gaither scored five of the Bobcats' eight points on a layup and 3-point basket.
Erskine opened the second half on a 16 to 1 run and never trailed after that. Freshman
Maurice Daniels, Jr. (Spartanburg, SC, Dorman High School) paced the run, scoring 7 of the Fleet's 16 points.
Perkins led all-scorers with a game-high 31 points, the second game in a row he has scored 30 or more points. Daniels finished with 14 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals.
Lees-McRae had a balanced attack with four players finishing in double-figures, led by Darryl Bonds' 15 points and game-high 9 rebounds. Raul Tutton and Mike Chambers scored 14 and 13 points respectively. Josh Gaither came off the bench to add 10 points.
Erskine returns home this Saturday to host non-conference foe Allen University. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
