Erskine notches first win at Lees-McRae

Box Score Banner Elk, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet defeated conference foe Lees-McRae College on the road for the first time in five years to even their conference record at 5-5 and improve to 6-11 overall.  The Fleet also snapped a seven game road losing skid.

For the third consecutive time, the Fleet overcame a one-set deficit to win the match as they beat the Bobcats 3-1.  The opening set started well for the Fleet as they leapt out to a six point lead behind two kills by freshman Allie Evans (Frisco, TX, Frisco High School).   But Lees-McRae crawled back into the set late and tied the game at 22-22 on a service ace by Angela Morse.  The Bobcats won three of the next four points to steal the opening set 25 to 23.

The Bobcats tried to steal the second set but Coach Vahjen's squad squashed their late rally this time to win the second set 25 to 23.

The Fleet won the last two sets easily 25-21 and 25-17 to seal their first win in Banner Elk in five years.

Junior Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) earned her fifth double-double of the season and her second in a row with a game-high 17 kills and 10 digs to lead the Fleet.  On the back row, senior Anna Butrym (West Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) recorded a career-high 24 digs while sophomore Catherine Hurt (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) had a career-best 21 assists from her setter position.

In a recent schedule change, Erskine will travel to Belmont Abbey this Thursday in an important conference matchup.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
