Box Score 2 Due West, SC – Playing in the University of Minnesota Classic Tournament, the Erskine Women’s Volleyball Team faced a tough start to their 2012 season. In their four games, the Flying Fleet faced #6 and host University of Minnesota-Duluth today and will play #19 Ferris State University tomorrow.
Erskine lost to host UMD in straight sets (3-0) to open their season. UMD limited the Fleet to just 17 kills over the three sets. Sophomore
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) led the Fleet attack with 6 kills while senior setter
Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) had 13 assists along with 2 kills and 4 digs. UMD’s Kate Lange had a game-high 13 kills along with 8 digs. Libero Julie Rainey had an impressive 17 digs, also a game-high.
Although Shippensburg won the second game 3-0, the Fleet performed much better, narrowly dropping the three sets 25-22, 25-23, and 25-22. Senior
Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) recorded a game and career-high 16 kills along with 7 digs. Bullock contributed 13 kills and two blocks. Chabra logged her first “double-double” of the season with 36 assists and 11 digs. For Shippensburg, Jill Edwards earned a “double-double” with 12 kills and a game-high 13 digs.
Erskine returns to action tomorrow morning against Bemijdi State at 9 a.m. and concludes the tournament against #19 Ferris State at 4:00 p.m.
