Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine lost 3-0 to local in-state rival Newberry 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 17-25) in non-conference women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena.
The loss halted a three game win-streak for the Flying Fleet, who are now 15-11 overall and 13-2 in conference. Newberry improves to 16-11 on the season.
Erskine opened the first set with an 8-5 lead behind two splendid kills by
Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School). Newberry used a timeout to tighten their defense, using 4 blocks to ignite an 11-5 run forcing Erskine Head Coach Heather Vahjen to call timeout. Newberry closed out the set on an 8-2 run, highlighted by two kills by Samantha Parrish and a kill by Jessica King. Stewart finished with 4 kills in the set to pace the Fleet offensively.
Newberry continued to roll in the second set, leaping out to a 12-5 lead. Following a timeout, the Fleet regrouped but could not cut into the Wolves lead, losing the set 25-16. Sophomore
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) drilled 4 kills with 2 blocks to lead the Fleet.
After falling behind by four early, Erskine stayed close but Newberry closed out the set on a 6-2 run to win the match. Parrish had two kills while Madison Schultz added one to spark the Wolves’ run. Bullock added 4 more kills to finish with 10 kills on the night while freshman
Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School) contributed 3 kills in the set.
In addition to her 10 kills, Bullock finished with 6 digs and 2 blocks to lead the Fleet offensively. Defensively, senior
Bailey Thornton (Pauline, SC, Dorman High School) had 12 digs while
Megan Johnson (Little River, SC, North Myrtle Beach High School) had 10 digs.
Parrish earned a “double-double” with a game-high 13 kills and14 digs. Elyani Stokes had a game-high 15 digs to lead the Wolves on the back row while Schultz and Chelsea Mayor combined for 5 blocks up front.
Erskine concludes their regular season schedule this Saturday against Belmont Abbey College. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
