Box Score Due West, S.C. – After a sloppy start, the Erskine Flying Fleet slipped past the Valkyries of Converse College 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-14) in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena.
Needing just two more conference wins to clinch the top divisional seed, Erskine (13-10, 11-2) appeared to be cruising to their first of two wins by sprinting out to a 16-8 lead in the first set. Senior Lauren Stewart led the Fleet charge with 4 kills while fellow senior Alicia Bragg added two more kills. Following a timeout Converse rallied from the eight point deficit to tie the game at 22-22. Jenna Martin had back-to-back kills from her setter position while at one point the Fleet committed three consecutive errors to help Converse climb back into the game. Converse closed out the set on a 3-0 run, highlighted by two kills by Anna Williams, to win the opening set 25-22.
Fueled by their recent victory, a spirited Converse team kept the next two sets close. The second set was a see-saw affair with neither team commanding more than a four point lead. Erskine closed out the set on a 3-0 run, highlighted by two kills by sophomore Caitlin Bullock and a game-winning service ace by Kelly Sullivan, to take the second set 26-24.
In the third set, Erskine trailed until late in the set. After staking the Valkyries to a three point lead at 19-16 on a couple of errors, Erskine got some help to tie the game at 23-23. Bullock knocked down a massive spike and senior Liz Massey served another game-winning ace to give the Flying Fleet the 25-23 win.
Erskine rolled to an easy 25-14 victory in the fourth set to win the match 3-1. Bullock had 6 kills while Sullivan added 4 more kills plus a block to lead the Fleet offensive blitz.
Bullock had a career-high 21 kills along with 12 digs to earn her third “double-double” of the season. Bragg also had a career-high 10 kills. Senior setter Larz Chabra turned in her tenth “double-double” with 44 assists and a co-team-high 16 digs that she shared with Stewart.
Michaela Evens led the Valkyries with 7 kills while Aubrey Crosby had a game-high 29 digs on the back row.
This Friday the Fleet will attempt to clinch the Western Division title of Conference Carolinas against in-state conference foe North Greenville University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Erskine will recognize their seven graduating seniors. Admission is free to all home Erskine volleyball events.
