Erskine slips by Brevard 3-1

Chabra earns rare "triple-double"

Box Score Due West, S.C. – Senior Larz Chabra earned a rare “triple-double” with 12 kills, 46 assists and 21 digs as Erskine slips by Brevard 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 26-24) in non-conference women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena.

It is her first career “triple-double” and the first for the women’s volleyball program since returning as a varsity sport in 2009.
All four sets were closely contested with two sets requiring extra points.  In the first set, Erskine squandered an early six point as Brevard rallied to tie the set at 22-22.  Erskine scored the next three points, including a service ace by Brooke Dodge and a kill by Chabra, to prevail 25-22.

However, the Fleet were not so fortunate in the next set.  After taking a 17-11 lead, Brevard went on a 7-1 run capped by a service ace by Kayla Hanus to tie the game at 18-18.  Neither team could gain the required two point advantage until Fatima Charachorloo knocked down the game point at 27-25.  Charachorloo finished with a game-high 23 kills.

After exchanging points through the early part of the third set, Erskine grabbed the a commanding eight point lead at 20-12 that featured three service aces from Liz Massey and a tremendous kill by Lauren Stewart.  Erskine won the third set 25-20 to go up 2 to 1.
Erskine overcame a five-point deficit midway through the fourth and final set to win 26-24.  Stewart contributed a key kill and a service ace while freshman Kelly Sullivan teamed up with sophomore Caitlin Bullock for a block on game point.

Stewart earned her second “double-double” of the season with a team-high 15 kills and 11 digs.  She had an impressive .389 hitting percentage with just one error.  Sullivan and Bullock also had double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively.  Senior Bailey Thornton anchored the back row that recorded 98 digs on the night with team-high 23 digs.

Erskine overcame a tremendous effort by Charachorloo who, in addition to her 23 kills, had 13 digs and 2 blocks.  She was the only Brevard player to reach double-digits in kills.  Hanus also earned a “double-double” for the Tornados from her setter position with a game-high 46 assists and 21 digs.  Sydney Yeomans finished with a game-high 25 digs from her libero position.

With the win, Erskine (10-8) has now won eight of their last ten matches

Erskine hosts two conference games this weekend.  On Friday at 7:00 p.m. Erskine plays Limestone College while on Saturday the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College visit the friendly-confides of Belk Arena.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.  Admission is free to all home Erskine volleyball matches.
