Due West, SC – Senior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, Point Pilot HS) powered Erskine past Coker College 3-0 in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena. Campbell had a game-high 16 kills as Erskine climbed to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in conference. Coker slips to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in conference.
Erskine freshman Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) knocked down three of her nine kills to stake the Fleet to an early 4-3 in the first set. Erskine maintained the slim lead until midway through the set when Bullock put down another kill to put Erskine up 16-12 and force a Coker timeout. Coker pulled back to within one point but Erskine pulled away on two service aces and kills by Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, East Central CC) and Sandra Campbell to win the set 25-21.
The second set mirrored the first set with the Fleet holding a slight lead through the early stages. Spurred by consecutive kills by Bullock, Erskine leaped out to a 21-14 advantage. Following a timeout, Coker slowed the Fleet attack but could not draw any closer, losing the set 25-19.
Erskine continued to pound the ball opening the final set on two kills by Campbell and Larz Chabra and moved out to a 10-7 lead. Coker’s front line stiffened defensively recording four blocks to draw even at 16-16. The teams swapped points until Campbell smashed five consecutive kills to win the set 25-21 and give Erskine the victory.
Bullock and Murray contributed 9 kills each. Murray also had 4 blocks and 4 digs. Junior Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School)had another outstanding performance from her setter position with 6 kills, 34 assists, and 6 digs. Brooke Dodge anchored the back line with a game-high 15 digs.
Coker’s Hannah Vadakin had 9 kills on just 13 attempts along with 3 digs to lead the Cobras.
Erskine looks to extend their win streak to three games on Wednesday when the defending conference champions, Lees-McRae College, visits Belk Arena in a pivotal Conference Carolinas match-up. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
