Due West, SC – Erskine held Lees-McRae to just one bucket over the last three minutes of the game to win 61-54 in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Belk Arena.
Erskine took an early 10-4 lead on a 3-point basket by freshman Travis Liner (Charlotte, NC, Northside Christian Academy). Lees-McRae quickly recovered using a 9-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. From that point, neither team held more than a three point lead with the Bobcats leading at halftime 26-25.
The second half remained close with the lead changing hands 7 times along with 5 ties. With Erskine leading by two points with 1:21 remaining, freshman Casey Sorrell (Walton, KY, Simon Kenton High School)drilled a 3-point basket to give the Fleet a five point lead at 56-51. Filip Pejovic (Prijepolje, Serbia, Prijepoljska Gimnazija) quickly made it a six point game after making 1 of 2 free throws. Lees-McRae responded immediately with a trey by Adam McFerran (Stow, OH/Wheeling Jesuit H.S.) to cut the lead back to three at 57-54 with just under a minute remaining. After working the clock down to 27 seconds, freshman DeShaun Hall (Inman, SC, Landrum High School) nailed a clutch jumper to put the Fleet back up by four points at 59-54. After a Lees-McRae miss, Hall clinched the victory with two made free throws to give the Fleet the 61-54 victory.
Erskine was outshot by Lees-McRae 45.2% to 37.3%. However, the Fleet held the Bobcats to just 1 of 10 from 3-point range while converting 16 of 19 from the free throw line.
Pejovic led the Fleet with a game-high 14 points and 7 rebounds while Hall added 11 points.
Daniel Sepokas was the only Bobcat to reach double-digits with 14 points.
Erskine goes on the road this Saturday to Mt. Olive College. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
