Volleyball Opens Season With a Win

Florence, SC – The Erskine Volleyball Team opened their 2010 season on the road at the Francis Marion University Invitational Tournament.   The Fleet won their opening game against Brenau University defeating the Brenau Golden Tigers in four sets 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, and 25-21.  Unfortunately, the Fleet could not sustain the momentum through their 2nd game losing to host Francis Marion in four:  20-25, 25-13, 22-25, and 18-25.

Against Brenau, junior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX/Pilot Point H.S.) led the Fleet attack with 15 kills and 6 blocks.  Sophomores Liz Massey (Greenville, SC/Eastside H.S.) and Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA/Hart County H.S.) also contributed double-digit kills with 13 and 11 respectively.   Setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Wando H.S.) finished with 55 assists while Libero Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC/Byrnes H.S.) had a career-high 55 digs in the game. 

Sandra Campbell continued her strong play against Francis Marion with 12 kills and 6 blocks while senior Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN/Goodhue H.S.) also contributed 10 kills and 1 block.  Larz Chabra directed the Fleet attack with 35 assists.  Defensively, the Fleet had three players with double-digit digs led by Liz Massey with 18, Brooke Dodge 17, and Julie Jackson 15.

The Fleet play two more games on Saturday.  The Fleet play fellow Conference Carolinas member Barton College at 9 a.m. followed by UNC-Pembroke at 1 p.m.

The Fleet begin conference-play at home on Tuesday, September 7th, against the Crusaders of Belmont-Abbey College.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.
