Erskine Volleyball Cruises Past Mount Olive College 3-0

Due West, SC – The Erskine volleyball team cruised past Mount Olive College today winning in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, and 25-19 in Conference Carolinas volleyball action.  With the victory, the Flying Fleet improve to 13-5 and 10-1 in conference.  More importantly, the Fleet stay within a game of first place Lees-McRae College in the conference standings.  Mount Olive College drops to 3-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

It was not until midway through the first set that the Fleet put away the Trojans of Mount Olive College.  Tied at twelve all, the Fleet rattled off nine straight points and finished on a 13-4 run to win the set.   Junior Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, Point Pilot HS) sparked the Erskine run with 4 kills and a block.  Campbell finished with 8 kills and a game-high 4 blocks.

The Fleet quickly put away the Trojans in the second set scoring the first five points of the set and jumping out to a 14-7 lead forcing the Trojans to take a timeout.  The Fleet continued to dominate the net with 5 blocks in the second set.

The Trojans made a run in the third set closing within one on Tiffany Hight’s ace at 12-11.  After swapping points with the Fleet clinging to a 18-16 lead, Erskine’s Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA, Hart County High School) led the Fleet on a 4-0 run with 3 kills.  Junior Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, Hermann HS) closed out the set with two strong kills giving the Fleet the win.

Murray led all scorers with a game-high 9 kills.  Setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) had another fabulous game directing the Fleet attack with 27 assists, 4 kills, and 4 digs.  Stewart had 7 kills and 3 blocks for the Fleet as well.

Ashlee Rueter led the Trojans with 8 kills and 4 blocks while setter Kailey Preece had 22 assists.

The Fleet travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, to face local rival Lander University on Tuesday in non-conference volleyball action.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
