Due West, SC – Behind Sandra Campbell’s season-high 19 kills, the Erskine volleyball team pounded rival Anderson University 3 to 1 (25-21, 25-21, 15-25, 25-20) in non-conference women’s volleyball action at Belk Arena. With the win, the Flying Fleet improve to 12-5 overall while Anderson dips to 10-6 overall.
In the first set, neither team could garner more than a two point lead until late in the match. Trailing 21 to 19, Erskine rattled off six consecutive points, including three points coming from Campbell, to win the set 25 to 21.
Erskine continued to play well into the second set grabbing a seven point lead at one point. Anderson closed to within two at 18 to 16 on Tori Calhoun’s kill but the Fleet pulled away, getting two kills from junior Jamie Murray (Hermann, MO, Hermann HS) and Campbell (Pilot Point, TX, Point Pilot HS) to win 25 to 21.
Looking to avoid the sweep, Anderson turned to their senior standout Jamie Lancaster in the third set. The senior responded with six of her team-high fourteen kills to give Anderson the 25 to 15 victory.
The fourth match remained even until Erskine scored four successive points led by two quick hits from Erskine setter Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School), who finished with 8 kills on just 11 attempts. Anderson rallied and tied the game at 19 on a block by Tiffany Rowe. At that point, Murray led the Fleet on a dramatic 6 to 1 run, smashing three hard kills to win the game for the Fleet.
Erskine's Jamie Murray just missed a “double-double” with 13 kills and 9 digs on the night. Campbell also had a game-high 5 blocks while Larz Chabra had a great all-around game with 49 assists, 8 kills, 5 digs and a block. Sophomore Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School)had another solid performance on the back row with a team-high 16 digs.
For Anderson, Jamie Lancaster and Tori Calhoun combined for 14 kills each while Adria Mullaney had a game-high 19 digs. Hayley Hoover had 30 assists from her setter position.
The Fleet host Mount Olive College this Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
