Due West, SC – Cheered on before a great crowd of students and alumni, the Erskine Volleyball overpowered Converse College 3 sets to 0 at Belk Arena tonight. Erskine jumped out quick in the first set but Converse would respond with a run following a timeout to close within 2, making the game 12 to 10. The two teams battled the rest of the way with Erskine winning 25 to 21.
In the second set, it would be the Valkyries running out to a quick 8 to 1 lead before Coach Heather Vahjen would call a timeout. Coach Vahjen’s squad countered, eventually knotting the game at 16 to 16. The teams would exchange points until Erskine would go on a 6 to 0 run to close out the 2nd set 25 to 19.
Both teams struggled to find any momentum in the 3rd set. The score swung back forth the entire game with neither team getting more than a 3 point lead. In the end, Erskine won the last two points to secure the victory 25 to 23 in the hard fought final match.
For the match, Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN/Iowa Lakes CC) lead the Fleet with 8 kills while Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, GA/Hart Co. H.S.) scored 7 kills and Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Wando H.S.) contributed 7 kills from the setter position. Defensively, four Fleet players had double-digit digs with Brooke Dodge (Duncan, SC/Byrnes H.S.) pacing the group with 14, followed by Larz Chabra with 12, and Liz Massey (Greenville, SC/Eastside H.S.) and Julie Jackson (Simpsonville, SC/Southside Christian School) each with 11 digs. The Erskine front line amassed 8 blocks on the evening. Alex Acevedo (Roebuck, SC/Dorman H.S.) lead the team with 1 solo block and 4 block assists.
With the win, Erskine evens its conference record at 1-1 (3-8 overall) while Converse drops to 1-2 (6-8 overall). Erskine plays on the road this weekend with games against Queens University on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday at Pfeiffer University. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. Converse College returns home with games against Barton College and Mount Olive College.
