Volleyball Tournament Added to Homecoming Festivities

Due West, SC – With the return of volleyball this year, the Erskine Athletic Department is pleased to announce the addition of the Aramark Classic Volleyball Tournament to this year’s homecoming festivities.  “We are thrilled to add this event.  It will add to the overall excitement of the homecoming weekend,” commented Athletic Director Mark Peeler.  In addition to the Erskine team, four other colleges, Brenau University, Converse College, North Greenville University, and Piedmont College, will compete in this year’s tournament.

Returning alumni and volleyball fans will have an opportunity to see the Flying Fleet in action three times on Saturday.  For early risers and arrivers, Erskine kicks off the tournament at 8 a.m. against North Greenville University.  Later that day, the Fleet will play back to back matches against Brenau University at 2 p.m. and Piedmont College at 4 p.m.  All three Erskine games will be in Belk Arena in the Galloway Center.  “We invite the Erskine alumni to come cheer us on.  Our theme for this year is ‘Building a Legacy’ and it is our desire for this tournament to become a homecoming tradition that alumni will want to attend,” stated Head Coach Heather Vahjen.

While probably not too surprising to the coach, the Erskine team has done quite well this year.  The Flying Fleet are currently in 6th place in Conference Carolinas (7-6) and have an overall record of 9-13.  Considering the team is comprised of twelve freshmen and just one junior transfer, the Fleet are exceeding expectations.  With five conference games remaining, the Fleet not only want to make the conference tournament, the top eight teams are invited, but are also striving to host a first round match.  “It would be an incredible accomplishment for our team if we are to host the first round of the conference tournament,” commented Coach Vahjen.
