Fleet Surprise Anderson!

Anderson, SC – The Flying Fleet earned their first road conference victory last night in a hard-fought match against archrival Anderson University at the Abney Athletic Center.  Each set was very tight but Erskine prevailed, winning the match 3 sets to none.

In the opening set, Erskine grabbed a 12-7 advantage before Anderson closed the gap to 20-18.  Anderson would get no closer as the Flying Fleet collected the narrow 25-22 win.

The second frame was similar as the Fleet pushed out to an early lead, only to see the Trojans battle back.  Erskine squeezed out the victory with an identical 25-22 score.

The third set tied three times early and five times total.  Erskine broke away from a 4 to 4 tie to take a 12-8 lead.  Anderson closed to within two before Erskine rallied for their largest lead at 19 to 14.  The Trojans knotted the set at 20 to 20 before the Fleet edged out the 25 to 23 victory.

Erskine’s Liz Massey (Greenville, SC/Eastside H.S.) and Anderson’s Jamie Lancaster shared match-high honors with 12 kills a piece, while Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC) earned 33 assists, the 2nd game in a row with 30 plus assists.  Defensively, Liz Massey also contributed 10 digs, earning her third double-double on the season while throwing up 4 blocks.  Liz was supported defensively by Bailey Thornton and Brooke Dodge, both with double digit digs.  Alison Albers (Goodhue, MN/Iowa Lakes CC) also had 3 noteworthy blocks on the evening.

With this road victory, Erskine improves to 6-10, 4-3 in Conference Carolinas, and moving them into a tie with Anderson University in the standings.  In addition, Erskine currently possesses a three game win streak.  Anderson drops to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in Conference Carolinas and saw their 3 game win streak ended.

The Fleet continue their road-trip as they travel to Belmont-Abbey and Lees-McRae College this weekend.
