Russ Gregg

Russ Gregg enters his fifth season as the Flying Fleet head women’s basketball coach at Erskine College.

Gregg first arrived at Erskine in 2011 after spending six seasons at Lander University as an assistant coach under Kevin Pederson. During his tenure, the Lady Bearcats compiled a record of 119-67 and won two Peach Belt Conference regular-season and two conference tournament championships. They also advanced to the NCAA Division II national tournament the last four years, winning the school’s first NCAA postseason game in 2008.  In 2010, the Lady Bearcats finished the season 27-4 and earned the number 1 seed in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Tournament and finished the season ranked #11 in the WBCA/USA Today coach’s poll. This past season Lander was ranked #1 in the nation for five consecutive weeks and advanced to their second Sweet 16 appearance.

Previously, Gregg was the assistant women’s coach at Anderson University for three years (2002-2005).   Gregg played an integral part in the development of the program at Anderson, which was 75-22 during his tenure, including an astonishing 33-3 in 2004-2005.  The Lady Trojans won two conference titles and twice advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament, making to the Sweet 16 in 2005.

In his coaching career, Gregg has had the privilege of coaching the 2011 WBCA National Player of the Year and Peach Belt Player of the Year Shannon McKever as well as two-time conference player of the year Tiara Good and the NCAA Division II all-time leading scorer LaShonda Chiles. Both Good and Chiles earned NCAA Division  II All-American status.

During the 2011-12 season, Gregg guided the Flying Fleet to a 10-8 league finish and a 13-14 overall record.  The Flying Fleet was led by senior point guard and Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Porsha Morgan.  Morgan was also named 1st Team All-Conference. She was also named an honorable mention All American by the D2 Bulletin.

The senior point guard was second in Conference Carolinas in both scoring (19.7 ppg) and assists (131 apg) while logging over 38 minutes played per game.  Morgan’s season scoring average of 19.7 ranks fifth best in Erskine women’s basketball history while holding the single game scoring record.  Career-wise, Morgan ranks second all-time in both scoring (1,894) and assists (546).

The 2012-13 season became an essential time for rebuilding the Flying Fleet program after losing leading scorers Porsha Morgan and Elizabeth Tatum to graduation.  The Lady Fleet would obtain vital playing experience that will essentially help reestablish its competitive tradition in the Conference Carolinas league.

Gregg earned a bachelor’s degree in health/physical education in 2001 from Southern Wesleyan University, where he played two seasons for the Warriors.  He earned a master’s degree in Sports Leadership from Duquesne University in 2009.

Gregg is married to the former Paige Kausler and the couple recently had a son named Ross.  Theyreside in Greenwood, South Carolina.
