Erskine Men's Soccer | Fleet soar past Shorter

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (3-7-1, 3-6-1 CC) defeated Shorter University (2-11-1, 1-9-1 CC) at Huggins Field on Saturday afternoon.

Adolfo Espino gave the Fleet an early lead in the 13th minute with his first goal as a member of the Fleet, and then second-half strikes from Andreas Aspris and Evan Williams sealed a home win for Erskine.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Back on its home field, the Fleet were looking to avenge an early-season loss to Shorter, and Erskine dominated the opening minutes. The Fleet won a penalty just eight minutes in, and despite not being able to convert, continued to create all the chances. Then, in the 13th minute, DeMar Belton set up an Adolfo Espino goal as Erskine had its breakthrough. Erskine was stout defensively through the remainder of the half, holding the Hawks to just a pair of shots that were both off-target as the Fleet went into the break, leading 1-0. Just five minutes into the second half, the Fleet doubled their lead through an Andreas Aspris goal courtesy of a Jonh Sanchez assist. Goalkeeper Beckham Boomershine made a pair of saves in the ensuing minutes, as part of his second clean sheet of the year, and Evan Williams sealed the win with a breakaway goal in the 89th minute.

THE PLAYER
Freshman Jonh Sanchez assisted the Fleet's second goal to double Erskine's lead just minutes after halftime and was lively and impactful on the right wing all afternoon for the Fleet. The assist was Sanchez's first goal-involvement as a member of the Flying Fleet.

THE TEAM
Erskine held a significant 11 to 2 advantage in shots on goal, and earned 8 corner kicks, as well as totaling double-digits in shots each half.
