Erskine Men's Soccer | Fleet hold on for win over King on Senior Day

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's soccer team (1-15, 1-11 CC) defeated King University (3-14-1, 0-12-1 CC) by a score of 2-1 at Huggins Field on Saturday evening.

Gustavo Avina opened the scoring for the Fleet iwith a lovely lobbed finish in the 28th-minute, before Parker Hope's deflected strike from outside the box ten minutes later gave Erskine a 2-0 lead at the break. King applied pressure in the second half and a 72nd-minute goal from the visitors made for an entertaining final 15 minutes of the match. But, the Fleet held on to pick up a win on Senior Day.

THE PLAYER
One of six seniors on this year's Erskine team who were honored before the match, goalkeeper Evan Zizek shined down the stretch to preserve the win. After not being called on in the opening half, Zizek was forced into four saves in the second half, none more crucial and spectacular than a full-extension one-handed stop to deny King an equalizer from point blank range in the 81st minute.

THE TEAM
Erskine was outshot by King 14 to 9, but the Fleet held a 7 to 5 advantage in shots on target.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Despite the win, Erskine did not qualify for the upcoming Conference Carolinas Tournament, so their 2023 season came to an end on Saturday night.
