Due West, SC – The Erskine College Flying Fleet defeated the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University this evening 80-71. This win marks the 2
nd in a row and the 12
th victory in the last 14 contests for Erskine. The Fleet are now 12-10 overall and 11-5 in Conference Carolinas action.
The Fleet started a little slow in the first quarter. They committed 6 turnovers and were whistled for 6 fouls. Erskine had 3:00 left to go in the quarter and Southern Wesleyan held a 16-6 league and prompted
Russ Gregg to call a timeout. The Fleet ended the quarter on a 7-3 run and were right back in the game.
Raygon Hendrix and
Kristin Giles led the Fleet with 4 points a piece. The second quarter was a little more balanced from both teams. Southern Wesleyan extended their lead by 1 more point.
Raygon Hendrix pitched in another 6 points and Aneysa Williams, for Southern Wesleyan, scored 13 in the half.
Tyndell Mendenhall pitched in 6 points in 5 minutes of action off of the bench. Erskine shot 37.5% from the field and Southern Wesleyan scored at 50% rate.
Erskine played a great 3
rd quarter and cut the SWU lead down to 1. The Fleet's 24 points in the quarter were largely due to the 11 points
Kristin Giles scored. Erskine began to take away some of the easy buckets Southern Wesleyan shot from the inside and made it harder for the Warriors to score. The fourth quarter was all Fleet! Erskine allowed 11 points and scored 21 of their own to seal the deal. Erskine ended the game shooting 45.1% from the field and an impressive 43.8% from three-point range. Southern Wesleyan shot 37.8% and 13.6% from behind the arc.
Erskine returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Gaffney, SC to take on the Saints of Limestone College. Game time is set for 5:30 P.M.
