Box Score Franklin Springs, Ga. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (12-10, 10-6) overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to beat the Lions of Emmanuel College (14-6, 10-6) 60 to 55 tonight in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at Belk Arena.
Erskine opened the second half with a 14 to 2 run to regain the lead. Sophomore
Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA, Governor Mifflin High School) started and capped off the run with a drive to the bucket for a layup and 3-point shot. Espinosa finished with a team-high 15 points.
The lead exchanged hands three more times before the Fleet pulled away to a six point lead.
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) made a layup followed by two free throws and
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) made a nice move in the post to give the Fleet a 51 to 45 lead.
With a little over two minutes remaining, Emmanuel's Elise Coberly brought the home-crowd to their feet, drilling a 3-point shot to tie the game at 55 to 55.
The Fleet immediately reclaimed the lead on a 3-point basket by Giles. At that point, neither team could capitalize despite numerous opportunities. With time winding down, Bannerman hit two free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory for the Fleet.
Erskine was led by Tara Potter's double-double of 11 points and 13 rebound while Giles had 13 points.
Emmanuel's Elise Coberly led all scorers with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
With tonight's win, Erskine remains in the hunt to host in the first round of the conference tournament. Erskine currently is in a three-way tie for third place with Emmanuel and Belmont Abbey. The top four teams in standings host in the opening round.
Erskine will seek to pick up another victory this Saturday at home against the Lees-McRae College (4-12, 5-17). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
